  4. Micrurus fulvius

  6. Identification: 15-42 in. Long, slender with snout black with repeating black, red and yellow rings encircling the whole body. However, there are no red rings on the tail portion of the body; scales smooth. The rhyme " red on yellow kill a fellow, red on black friend of Jack" helps differentiate 
  7. coral snakes from the harmless snakes with 
  8. similar colors. Warning: Venomous!

  10. Habit: They are found in wooded areas hidden in leaf litter, in logs and under logs.

  12. Distribution: Most of Louisiana except the marshes and Atchafalaya Basin; see map for individual parishes.

Comments: Coral snakes are very secretive and usually remain concealed unless they are out foraging during the day, and are rarely observed. They eat small snakes, lizards and frogs. This snake is dangerously venomous. They seem docile when handled but can bite unexpectedly and without warning; DO NOT HANDLE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! Their bite can be fatal.
